Do you have that one food item that intimidates you? Scares you a bit because you think it’s impossible to make and will end up a disaster?

Well, I have quite a few. With most of them are in the baking realm. We all know I was not blessed with the baking skill. While I gawk over and over the delicious looking cookies on pinterest, whenever I venture into the kitchen, mine look less than stellar.

Depressing I tell ya. Because those cookies are tempting to me and this baby.

But you know another food item that has been on my ‘baking bucket list?’ Scones!

Ever since I worked in a coffee shop, I have had a special place in my heart for scones after I had my first bite of their mini vanilla bean scones.  Sweet, tender and buttery. Perfection in every way.

For some reason, over the years, I thought they were way above my head. Out of my league. A bakery treat left to the professionals.

Well, that was until I conquered my fear and tackled these scones. And it was a good day! Bakery style scones right in my own home. Dreams do come true!

While I still daydream of those vanilla bean scones (next time…), fruit filled scones with decadent chocolate just may surpass them. So when I bake up a batch of these scones for Sunday brunch, we know it has to be a good day!

The base of these scones whole wheat flour are made with whole wheat flour so you are able to start your day with a nutritious treat. Then, the best part comes into play. Chocolate! But not ordinary chocolate; Brookside Dark Chocolate Blueberries! A smooth blueberry center draped in dark chocolate. When gently folded into the scones, they provide a fruity and sweet surprise when bit into.

I have been a fan of Brookside chocolates for years, as I loved to end my day on a sweet note with a few blueberry bites. A must in my books. And now, Brookside has several new varieties that are available exclusively at Target for those bigger cravings! Which I know all about with this pregnancy! This baby is going to love Mexican and chocolate!

Between the Blueberry & Cranberry Almond, to the Cranberry Almond, to the Mango Coconut and to the Summer Berry, I feel like my dessert choices just got a whole lot tougher. But with Target’s Cartwheel app, I am able to keep all of these chocolate treats on hand to suit whatever my cravings may be!

Lucky for you, with the Target Cartwheel app, you can save up to 30% on Brookside chocolates from July 12th to August 1st; and save 15% from August 23rd to September 19th!

Make sure to check out more about Brookside chocolates at Target along on Facebook! And don’t forget to check out the Cartwheel app for more savings!

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups white whole wheat flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup Brookside dark chocolate covered blueberries
  • 1/3 cup half and half
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • Optional:
  • 1 tablespoon half and half, to brush
  • Sugar, to sprinkle

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease with non stick spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon together.
  3. Add the butter, mixing it by hand or with a pastry cutter, till the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  4. Stir in the dark chocolate blueberries
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the half and half, vanilla extract and egg. Add to the flour mixture and stir just untill the dough just comes together.
  6. Transfer the dough to a thoroughly floured work surface. Knead it a couple of times and transfer to prepared baking sheet.
  7. Shape it into a 1/2" thick round and about 8" across.
  8. Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar, if desired.
  9. Cut the round in 8 wedges. Separate the wedges slightly so they don't bake together.
  10. Bake the scones for about 15 - 18 minutes, or until they're golden brown. Remove them from the oven, let cool for 3 - 4 minutes then remove from baking sheet.
  11. Serve immediately or let cool completely and store in an air tight container.
