How to Make Your Own Cold Brew

If you have ever wondered how to make your own cold brew, then you’ve come to the right place! This Perfect Homemade Iced Coffee is a simple, cold brew coffee with only 2 ingredients!

homemade cold brew

After spending my monthly paycheck at Starbucks on my morning pick me up’s, I decided it was time to experiment in the kitchen. After all, I did spend two wonderful years in college as a barista and attempting to make the ‘entirely too long coffee concoctions’. After moving on from Starbucks, I realized I no longer had the luxury of free beverages and that was the start of my expensive addiction.

Then it hit me. Hello, homemade cold brew is so simple! It is much more than pouring hot coffee over ice. Please, please, please do not go that route. It dilutes the pure, coffee flavor and also gives you luke warm iced coffee. Ew.

The process of soaking coffee beans overnight, rather than brewing coffee and chilling has many other benefits. It reduces the acidity by up to 70%; so if you think coffee is too bitter or if it bothers your stomach, then homemade cold brew is for you!  It also enhances the flavor of the coffee beans; so your caramel drizzle will taste more like caramel than just a regular cup of joe!

This Perfect Homemade Iced Coffee is a simple, homemade cold brew coffee that will make you think it's a coffee house treat!

ingredients for homemade cold brew

  • 6 oz coarse ground coffee beans
  • 6 cups cold water
  • For Serving, Milk, Homemade Bailey’s Irish Cream or Sweetener of choice

how to make your own cold brew

It is so simple and might make you wonder why you haven’t been making your own cold brew all along!

  1. In a large container, combine coffee beans and water. Make sure all the coffee beans are covered and saturated. See the above picture.
  2. Cover and allow to sit overnight, 24 hours is ideal. You can store it in the fridge or room temperature if you wish.
  3. Set a fine-mesh strainer, and/or line with cheesecloth (this will catch more of the coffee grounds), over a pitcher or another container.
  4. Slowly pour coffee mixture through strainer, allowing all the liquid to seep through. You may need to help push the liquid through the strainer. Pour the mixture through the strainer one to two more times to ensure all the grounds have been caught. (This is where a cheesecloth comes in handy.) Discard grounds after filtering.
  5. Place coffee in the fridge, in a sealed container and allow to chill until ready to use.
  6. To make an iced coffee, add ice cubes to a glass. Add a 1:1 ratio of coffee to water and mix well.
  7. Add sweetener and milk to taste, stir well. Taste and adjust milk and sweetener if needed.
  8. Sit back and enjoy!

how to store cold brew

After draining your cold brew, add to a sealed container and store it in the fridge until ready to consume.

how long does cold brew coffee last?

Your homemade cold brew concentrate will last for 1 to 2 weeks in the fridge. But the flavor will dilute after the first week so I would suggest consuming in the first week for the best flavor.

How to personalize your homemade cold brew

Use flavored beans, or add vanilla extract, cinnamon, cocoa powder or vanilla powder to the steeping process to put a personal touch on it!

Meg - quick question - dumb one too probably but I wanted to be sure before making this - do you leave the coffee beans WHOLE overnight or do you ground them first? I've never used coffee beans before, so I wasn't quite sure. Thank you! :) Can't wait to try this as I too have an extreme addiction to Starbucks AND my son is a Barista, so I get a lot of perks! :)

It's such a delicious pick me up in the afternoons, or mornings! Love this! P.S. I was a Starbucks barista in college too..I LOVED that job..the 4am-12..ehh, I could have done without that, but that was also what began my expensive addiction. Totally worth it!

Hi Sandy, in theory, this process is very easy. For a french press, I would assume you would just put the grounds in the bottom of the press. Cover with water, let sit for 12 hours then press it down. But to truly get all the grounds out, the only way is to pour the coffee through a filter or cheesecloth so that any grounds that may have snuck through the mesh plunger won’t end up in your cup. Hope that helps!

I love iced coffee! Canadian here... so I have a question about your measures: I've made cold brewed iced coffee before, but am always confused by the proportions! I know "ounces" can mean weight or volume, and depending on which one you choose, you get a different measure. Is your 6 ounces of coffee in weight or in volume? Last summer I tried a recipe and weighed my coffee, because I assumed if it's a dry measure it means weight, but it filled almost my entire French Press with grounds. So I'm thinking maybe coffee grounds should be measured in fluid ounces? I'm definitely ready to try again, because my iced coffee habit has been breaking the bank even though there's still snow on the ground. Thanks for the recipe!

Hi Lacey, unfortunately that is the process to ensure you get a true flavor. Granted, when you make the brew, it is concentrated so you use a 1:1 ratio of cold brew to water. Hope that helps!

My roommate in college worked at starbucks and she loved it too. I've been using this method for iced coffee for about a year now and I love it. I don't drink much coffee but I love the smell and flavor of strong coffee and this tastes great. I usually let it sit for 24 hours and then strain and my husband has coffee for the weekend (and I always get a taste). We live in Hawaii so it doesn't get cold enough that hot coffee even sounds good so it's always Iced coffee. I usually use 100% kona (a hawaiian coffee that is the best).

Goodness good catch! That is supposed to be 6 cups! Then when you go to make the coffee, you add a 1:1 ratio of water, milk, etc because the coffee when brewed overnight makes it concentrated so you dilute when you create your tasty beverage!

Hi Audrey! Well thank you! Actually, above in the post I explain why its different and why not to just chill it and pour over ice. Cold brew coffee actually soaks the coffee beans and infused the water, thus making the coffee less acidic and much smoother. So it is easier on your stomach along with pro ducting a much stronger flavor. Hope you enjoy!

Many years ago (50 plus!), my parents both enjoyed iced coffee in the summer; a lot of their friends thought they were nuts - I prefer to think they were just way ahead of their time! Back in the day, there were no fancy schmancy coffee machines - only the good old-fashioned drip or percolator type; my mum always used a drip coffee pot. She would use the "dregs" of leftover coffee to make coffee ice cubes, so that their cold drinks weren't watered down - they both enjoyed a fairly strong brew. As a kid, I can remember being allowed to get a couple of coffee ice cubes, some sugar and some milk, in a glass and waiting somewhat patiently for the cubes to melt... I'm quite sure that's when my love of all things coffee-flavoured, was born.

Thanks for the write up, I was wondering how it would work if you were to put the 6 oz of coffee grounds into a piece of cheesecloth rubber-band it shut and then let is sit overnight! and remove like a tea bag. I guess Ill experiment! looking forward to you irish ceam recipe!

Oh this sounds amazing. But, I went and ground the beans first before weighing them. Was the 6 oz weight you use before or after grinding? Not quite sure now what to use since I ground it already. Thanks!

Hi Amy, I weigh the beans before grinding. But regardless 6 oz will be the same for whole or coarsely ground beans. And I don't use completely ground coffee, I use coarsely ground. Just any FYI. I hope you enjoy!

I already tried making iced coffee with my friends and we just used a coffee powder sold commercial for it, it turns out that the taste is not that good and ends up to be diluted most of the time. Thanks to you for making this blog available and by the way that cheese cloth thing is just amazing.

I don't have a scale, but I did notice someone post a question regarding your 6oz weight measurement equaling about 2 1/4 cups of coffee(grounds) does that sound about right to you, I would really like to try making this iced coffee. Thanks for this recipe, I love iced coffee but failed in making it in the past.

One suggestion ... Don't discard your grounds. Instead, save them for your flowers or better yet a tomato plant. They will help the soil and reduce your waste!

Hi Jessica, You don't want to use completely ground coffee as it will make your cold brew really bitter and it will make the filtration process easier. Grinding too find can heat up the grounds and negatively affect your cup. Also make sure you are using freshly roasted beans. Typically, ground coffee has been sitting for some time and the flavor isn't there. Hope that helps! Enjoy! Megan

Hello! Silly question here... after the coffee beans/grounds have been strained and it is concentrated, I get that it needs to be diluted, but would I first dilute it 1:1 with water AND then also add my cream and sweetener? Or would I dilute it 1:1 with the cream? Thank you!

Hi Krystal! Not silly at all. Just dilute the coffee with any liquid! So you can dilute with the creamer, rather than water. Enjoy!
