Honey Chipotle Crispy Baked Wings

about these Honey Chipotle Crispy Baked Wings

Ironically, more than one great thing came out of being pregnant. The obvious one being my little guy, but the second? My love of sweet and spicy foods. I took the flavors of our favorite tacos, Honey Chipolte Chicken Tacos and turned them into my husband’s favorite game-day snack.

The combination of sweet, spicy and the hint of citrus makes for one appealing flavor palate. So for your next tailgate or BBQ, give these a try!

Ingredients needed for these crispy baked wings

  • Chicken Wings
  • Baking Powder
  • Chili Powder
  • Chipotle in Adobo Sauce (or Chipotle Powder, if gluten-free or paleo)
  • Cumin
  • Paprika
  • Garlic Salt (or Garlic Powder and Salt)
  • Onion Powder
  • Ground Coriander
  • Pepper
  • Honey
  • Lime Juice
  • Cilantro
  • Cornstarch

how to make these crispy baked wings

This recipe is super simple to make! No worrying about standing over a hot grill to get that crispy skin. The secret lies in the baking powder!

  1. First, you will mix the rub ingredients together in a large plastic bag. This makes it easier to coat the wings evenly.
  2. Add the wings and shake them up! When they are coated evenly, place them on a cooling rack atop a baking sheet. The cooling rack ensures air circulates all the way around the wings helping even more with the crispy skin.
  3. Bake until golden brown and crispy!
  4. Meanwhile, whisk together the Honey Lime Sauce and cook in a small saucepan until thickened slightly.
  5. Toss the wings in the sauce and serve immediately!

What about the Honey Lime Sauce?

I adore this honey lime sauce! It is simple and so versatile. You can leave the cornstarch out to make a tasty marinade for veggies, chicken and even pork. You can drizzle it over the finished product and even add to a starch, such as rice or quinoa to add last minute flavor!

What to serve with these crispy baked wings recipe

Whole lotta napkins! No, but seriously these wings are delicious to be paired with a salad, like this Bacon Chopped Salad for a well-rounded meal. Even these Slow Cooker Baked Beans would pair well.

how to store these crispy baked wings

Wings are best right after being made but if you want to prepare a big batch, I would refrain from tossing them in the Honey Lime Sauce until serving. And I would also crisp the wings back up in the oven under broil for a few minutes before enjoying.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings, patted dry
  • Chipotle Chicken Rub:
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons chipotle in adobo sauce i](or [Chipotle Powder if gluten free)[/i]
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt (or 3/4 teaspoon garlic power and 3/4 teaspoon salt)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • heaping 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • Honey Lime Dipping Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1 tablespoon minced cilantro leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Wings: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with foil and top with a cooling rack. Spray the cooling rack with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the chipotle chicken rub ingredients and add to a large plastic bag. Add the wings and shake until all the wings are evenly coated. Set wings evenly spaced apart on the prepared rack.
  3. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until wings reach 165 degrees F, golden brown and are crispy. (If using large wings, this will take closer to 45 to 55 minutes.)
  4. Honey Lime Dipping Sauce: When the wings are done cooking and cooling, add the dipping sauce ingredients to a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth and it thickens slightly, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and add to a large bowl.
  5. Add the cooked wings to the bowl and gently toss with the sauce. Serve immediately.

Oh yes!!!! I haven't been on the chicken wing train long but I am sure lovin it!! My husband has always been a big fan but for some reason I stayed away. Probably because he always eats the hottest ones he can and I prefer to save my taste buds and actually taste my food! :) Love these!

THANK YOU, Megan for this SUPER delicious chicken wing recipe! (Super, as in Super Bowl, get it? Ha!) I am going to serve these at my get-together on Sunday. Only 1 problem-- I won't know if the cheers are for the game, or the wings (probably the last)!

We LOVE this recipe- we also use it on mahi mahi for tacos! I make this rub so often that I started prepping it in bulk, so that I'd have it on hand. I've learned to scale back the chipotle, but I'm sort of a heat pansy :) Thanks for a great recipe!
