Avocado and Chile Lime Chicken Burgers

This post brought to you by Grate Chef, Inc.. All opinions are 100% mine.

Burgers get a makeover with lean ground chicken, red peppers and lime and finished off with a simple and quick guacamole! The perfect, swim suit friendly BBQ dish!

So let’s play a game. Let’s see how many chicken burgers I can eat in the few weeks before the wedding.

If you have known me for a hot minute, you know I use to loathe burgers. You see me and beef never really got along and to this day, we still aren’t besties. Flavorless, dry hockey pucks. No. Thank. You.

But since then, I have come around. Chicken burgers FTW. Lean chicken breast mixed with flavorful goodies and seared on the grill to achieve ideal grill marks have been a staple in our diet for many weeks now.

As every food blogger has done, I fell in love with Trader Joe’s Chile Lime Chicken Burgers and was determined to recreate them in my own kitchen. And all I can say is, I am blown away. Finely diced white onion provides the chicken moisture, while the red pepper, cilantro, garlic and lime give them a flavor boost.

And with flavors such as these, I couldn’t leave avocado out. The burgers were screaming for them. Truth. Simply mash avocado with salt, pepper and touch of cumin and you have an impromptu guac to marry perfectly with your burgers.

Feel free to load these puppies onto your favorite burger bun or eat with lettuce leaves, as we have done. Both are totally acceptable.

With our grill getting so much action lately, I have come to love Grate Chef grilling accessories! They are consumer-friendly products that are designed for the everyday backyard griller. Perfect for a girl that is learning her way with grills. Products such as the stainless steel wipes, fire starter and non-stick grill wipes work on all types of grills and the only ones on the market like it. They are all easy to use and make grilling more fun rather than feeling like a chore. The non-stick grill wipes won me over. They not only clean, they also oil the grill. Simply, preheat the grill to medium heat, attach wipe to a wire grill brush and move up and down to clean and oil the grates. Once entire surface is cleaned, simple toss and grill away! (Check it out here: Grate Chef Grill Wipes Video Demo.)

The stainless steel wipes help remove dirt and grease, prevent fingerprints, polish & restore and preserve the finish. Talk about keeping things looking snazzy! Grate Chef Flare down might just help me not to be so afraid of the grill. It helps to tame the flare ups that are caused by grease drips. Scary flames no more! (Check it out here: Grate Chef Flare Down Video Demo.) And the fire starter is a life savor for chick that has not conquered the chimney concept yet…a convenient and easy way to ignite charcoal grills, outdoor fireplaces, campfires, indoor fireplaces and pellet stoves! I like easy. And you will too!

Grate Chef products are made in America and can be found in hardware and supermarkets (find store locations here), and you can also buy online.

With Grate Chef products making grilling easier, I foresee A LOT of burgers in my future. Double win.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs lean ground chicken
  • 1/4 cup finely diced white onion
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely diced cilantro
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • Zest of 1 lime
  • *Guac:
  • 2 avocados
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 pepper
  • Lettuce or buns of choice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill.
  2. Mix ground chicken with onions, red pepper, cilantro, crushed red pepper, salt and pepper. Mix into 6 patties.
  3. Once grill is ready, add burgers and cook until seared on each side. About 5 minutes on each side.
  4. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, lightly mash avocado with salt, pepper and cumin. Do not mash all the way as you want some chunks to remain.
  5. When burgers are ready, place the guac on lettuce, then top with burgers and serve immediately.

Notes

*For Paleo, serve without buns as I usually do!

Meg, I LOVE your recipe and I cannot wait to try it! It has all the flavors I love in it. I'm a lot like you. I'm not a huge beef fan, but hubby is. We've compromised there and I will eat venison and he hunts so I rarely ever make a beef burger. I will make sure to let you know how these turned out for us!

This may be a dumb question, but where is the lime? I don't see any in the recipe although I put it in my guacamole. I just thought I'd check.

I am wondering ... are you supposed to add the lime to the chicken patty or to the guacamole? Recipe looks delicious! :)

Oh sorry about that! Add it to the chicken patty...but it would be tasty in the guac as well :) Thanks Jill!

Hi I was wondering how these burgers stay together without using an egg to bind it? I'm not great at cooking, I'm still learning so I was just curious. Thanks!

They do stick together...I can't explain the science behind it but I am allergic to egg so I left it out and it worked!

Your chicken patties look marvelous. I can taste them, just reading the ingredient list. What a nice change from ground beef and steak. In fact, I like this recipe so much that it is today's Recipe of the Day on my Facebook page, Cooking with Whole Grains & Real, Whole Food. Thanks for sharing it.

I'm trying to create new recipes for my 1-year old. Since she can't have dairy, I'm trying to find more ways to add veggies and healthy fats (like avocado) into her proteins. If I mashed the avocado into the chicken burger and baked it, would that be disgusting? I love avocado, but never had them baked (to my knowledge.)

Hi Emm, that is very creative! I can't say yes or no as I have never tried it. I would suggest just trying it with a couple of burgers to test it out first. Let me know how they go!
